I've a Feeling We're Not in Kansas Any More
U.S. City Changes Name To: "Google, Kansas" by Roger Davies
They say that imitation is the highest form of flattery, but what happens when a town imitates a search engine? In March, a Kansas city named Topeka took the extraordinary step of renaming itself to, well, Google!
Mayor Bill Bunten announced that Topeka was to be the "capital city of fibre optics", as he signed a proclamation allowing his city to be called "Google" until the end of March. The Kansas city hopes to be one of the first test sites for Google's new 50 megabit fibre optic broadband service which is 100 times faster than many other broadband services available today.
In the media frenzy that followed Google, Kansas found itself in the news around the world, and has certainly managed to capture Google’s attention. "We're excited to see the enthusiasm for fast and better broadband" remarked one Google spokesperson. "We thought this would be fun," remarked Bill Bunten in one interview, "and it has been."
One thing is for certain, Topeka’s own website topeka.org has never seen quite such a sudden flurry of traffic!
