Techie Talk? Beam me up Scottie!

Techies. They can be found deep within the jungles of your IT department, where they spend long periods bathed in the eerie glow of computer monitors. They emerge only periodically, to speak their own language which can be a tricky business to translate.

It’s called Techie Talk, and no matter how alien it may seem, understanding some of the terminology is a vital part of understanding your online business.

In this second edition of our techie talk series, we will be covering everything from Gigabytes and Google to Lemons and Linkbuilding!

Google: Launched in 1997, Google has become the most popular and well known search engine.

Gigabit: Unit of digital information storage. Normally seen as Gb. 1Gb = 1,000,000,000 bits in metric measure.

Hyperlink: A link to another page or website.

HTML: HyperText Markup Language, is the predominant markup language for web pages.

Hosting: Space on a server which is owned or leased where files can be uploaded and published on a web or shared between networks of computers.

Indexing: This is a process the search engines do to get a list of all the websites in the world.

Internet: Started its early life in 1958 as a military application for the US’s radar systems.

Infoseek: Popular search engine started in 1994, also known as Big Yellow. Infoseek has now been replaced by Yahoo! Search and is no longer used.

Javascript: Is a scripting language used to enable programmatic access to objects within other applications.

Jpg: JPEG is an image format file and a method of compression for photography imagery often used on websites.

K

Keyword: A word which forms (part of) a search engine query.

Kilobytes: A unit of measurement used to measure date storage and in the form of KBS, (kilobytes per second) data transfer. A kilobyte is made up of 1,024 bytes and 1 048 576 kilobytes make up a megabyte.

KEI: (Keyword Effectiveness Index) - The KEI compares the number of searches for a keyword with the number of search results to pinpoint which keywords are most effective for your website.

L

Linkbuilding: Sites which point to your own are known as backlinks. When it comes to optimisation the quality of the backlinks far outweighs the quantity. A quality link is one which comes from a content rich source which is in some way strongly relevant to your main site.

Lemon: A piece of technology that looks great and is marketed well, but does not work as well as intended.
